What is better than salty and sweet mixed together in delicious goodness? How about sweet, salty, AND relatively healthy? That’s right, you guessed it. I’m talking about your good, ol’ fashioned trail mix.

Walnuts and pecans. Walnuts and pecans are nutrient-dense nuts that promote both brain health and heart health. They're high in omega fatty acids, other healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals, and they're also a good source of antioxidants and fiber. They're a great addition to trail mix either raw or lightly toasted in the oven. I was looking forward to trying this recipe as my husband is a rare breed (in our circle) who likes a trail mix. The only 1 he would eat I bought online. This recipe sounded like the one I buy so I gave it a shot. I waited until the deluxe mix nuts in the 17.5 oz. Can was on sale at CVS and saved about 5.00.

  • Cinnamon – Cinnamon is only really OK around the holidays, which makes it a bad trail mix ingredient for about 11 out of 12 months of the year. Peanuts – Come on. Peanuts just aren’t that interesting. They aren’t terrible, but you can do a whole lot better.

This mix is ideally made for the trail. What trail, you ask? Well, the hiking trail of course! This mixture is the perfect blend of protein and carbohydrates to give you that energy boost when you decide to go out on that beautiful day and explore your area’s natural beauty.

Some people I know are hard core hikers. They even do overnight hiking which requires them to bring a pack filled with a tent, blankets, clothes, and other necessities. This Trail Mix Recipe is one of the favorite things for them to pack because it is lightweight and easy to store. This can be used for a quick meal. They can eat it three times a day if they prefer because it has what they need to sustain them.

There are many variations to trail mix, but I like this one because it is what comes to my mind when I think of a traditional recipe for trail mix. All you will need are some peanuts, raisins, sunflower seeds, and of course (my favorite part) some chocolate coated candy. Yum!

To make this process even simpler and less expensive, usually at least one grocery store in town has a fantastic bulk section. Buy these ingredients in this section. It will save you some bucks and you can get exactly the amount that you want for your mix. For those of you who are watching your sodium intake, this mix still tastes delicious when using low or no salted nuts and seeds.

Not only is trail mix fantastic for hikes, it is a great snack to have at parties. Whether it’s a holiday celebration or getting together to watch sports, trail mix is always a hit. Place it in a bowl in the center of the coffee table and it will be gone within minutes.

You can even make a fun, festive trail mix recipe around Christmas with switching up the candy to red and green. Put that out and boom, trail mix has now become a new favorite added to the holiday munchies table. Nothing is better than trail mix to take the edge off of your appetite while you smell that ham or turkey roasting away.

If you happen to have any left over (which I doubt) it is also a great thing to stick in your kids’ school lunches or take to work for a quick snack. This, in my opinion, is a combination made in heaven.
